Start with their life stage
Puppies need more energy, protein and calcium to grow, so feed a puppy food until they are fully grown. That is around 12 months for most breeds, and up to 18 to 24 months for large and giant breeds. Most dogs then move onto adult food, and many owners switch to a senior recipe from around age seven.
Choose dry, wet or raw
Dry food is convenient, good value and easy to portion. Wet food adds moisture and tempts fussy eaters. Raw and freeze-dried food suit owners who want minimally processed meals. Plenty of owners mix two together, or add a food topper for extra flavour.
Read the label
Look for the word "complete", which means the food meets all of your dog's daily needs on its own. Foods marked "complementary", like most toppers, are meant to be fed alongside a complete food. A named meat near the top of the ingredients tells you more than "meat and animal derivatives". Our own Huntland and Taylor's Natural Co. recipes are a good place to start.
Most dogs digest grains well, so grain free is not automatically better. It is a good option for dogs with a grain sensitivity, and our natural recipes are worth a look if you want a shorter, simpler ingredients list.
Get portions right and switch slowly
Start with the feeding guide on the pack, which is based on your dog's weight, then adjust for how active they are and remember to count treats. When changing food, mix a little of the new food into the old over 7 to 10 days so your dog's stomach can adjust. If they have a sensitive tummy, take it even slower.
