Dry cat food, or cat biscuits, is easy to store, simple to portion and good value, especially if you have more than one cat. Here is what we usually tell people.
Big bags and better value
If your cat is settled on a food, a big 10kg bag usually works out much cheaper per kilo than lots of small ones, and you'll find them from brands like Go-Cat, Iams, Royal Canin and James Wellbeloved. Use the Weight filter above to see the larger sizes. Bigger bags are heavy, so we deliver them to your door, and Bottomless Bowl saves you more on every order.
Start with their life stage
Kittens need more energy and protein to grow, so feed a dry kitten food until they are around 12 months old. Most cats then move onto adult dry food, and many owners switch to a senior recipe from around age seven, when cats become less active.
Read the label
Cats need a meat-based diet, so look for a named meat near the top of the ingredients. The word "complete" means the food meets all of your cat's daily needs on its own, including nutrients like taurine that cats can't make enough of themselves. Some "biscuits" are treats, so check the pack says complete.
Dry food contains very little moisture, and many cats don't drink much, so always leave fresh water out. A water fountain can encourage them to drink more, and plenty of owners add some wet food to the bowl too.
Portions, storage and switching
Weigh out the daily amount from the feeding guide rather than topping up the bowl, as it's easy to overfeed with dry food. Keep the bag sealed in a cool, dry place. When changing food, mix a little of the new food into the old over 7 to 10 days, and go slower with fussy cats.
Found a dry food your cat loves? Pop it on Bottomless Bowl. It turns up before the bag runs out, you save on every order, and you can pause or cancel whenever you like.
