FAQs

How can I tell if my dog or cat has worms?

In the early stages of infection, it's very difficult, and in many cases you simply will not know as the worms remain hidden inside your pet’s gut. Mature Tapeworms start shedding egg-filled segments, which irritate the pet's bottom as they wriggle out of the anus (and may be seen as what look like ‘grains of rice’) In dogs, this causes the classic symptom of Tapeworm infection -- 'scooting', or dragging the bottom along the ground. Apart from this, there are few definite signs, but these may include vomiting, diarrhoea, a dull, lifeless coat, a loss of appetite, lack of energy, and, especially in puppies and kittens, a pot-bellied appearance.

Why do I have to worm my pet?

There are several reasons for regular worming: Routine worming helps to ensure the well-being of your pet. It may be necessary to treat clinical disease arising from the presence of worms. Regular treatment reduces environmental contamination. Public health considerations.

Which wormer should I use?

Bayer Animal Health offers a whole range of small animal wormers. Drontal® Plus Flavour Bone Shape (for dogs) and Drontal® Cat tablets kill every type of intestinal worm commonly found in UK dogs and cats. Drontal® Oral Suspension for Puppies is available for use in puppies and young dogs, up to 1 year old. This product will control Roundworms, Whipworms and Hookworms, and is available as an easy to use liquid. Most young puppies should not need to be treated for Tapeworms, making Drontal® Oral Suspension for Puppies a very suitable choice. Should a puppy need Tapeworm treatment however, or if tablets are preferred, then Drontal® Plus Flavour Bone Shape is licensed for use in puppies from 2 weeks old. Should you need to specifically treat for Tapeworms, Droncit Tablets are licensed for use in both dogs and cats. In addition Droncit Spot-on, is available as an easy to use spot-on treatment for cats.

How often should I worm my dog/cat with Drontal®?

It is advised that an adult dog or cat should be treated for worms at least four times a year. There may be specific instances however where more frequent worming treatment is desirable. These would include: worming of puppies and kittens; cats that hunt and eat mice; dogs and cats experiencing repeated flea problems.

What types of worm do Drontal® wormers kill?

Drontal® is the wormer that kills every type of intestinal worm commonly found in UK dogs and cats. (Roundworms, Hookworms, Whipworms, and Tapeworms)

At what age should I start worming my puppy/kitten with Drontal®?

It is common for puppies to be born with worm larvae already present, having been exposed to them while still in the bitch's womb. It is advisable, therefore, to start a worming programme at 2 weeks of age, and to continue worming once a fortnight until 12 weeks old. It is also advisable to treat the bitch at the same time as the pups. Once a pup reaches 12 weeks of age, it should then be treated at least every 3 months.

Why is it necessary to clear up my dog's mess?

A single mature dog Roundworm (Toxocara canis) can produce 80,000 eggs a day, which are excreted with the dog's poo. If you don't clear it up, all of those eggs will remain in the environment, to infect other dogs and possibly children too.

My pet isn't showing any signs of infection - why should I worm him?

The point is that by the time symptoms are obvious your pet is already suffering. What's more, your pet will be spreading infection in the environment. For both reasons, it's much better to worm your pet routinely, at least every three months.

A pale brown to brown, bone shaped tablet scored on both sides for oral administration to dogs. Available in a beef flavour. The tablet can be divided into equal halves -

For the control of the following roundworms and tapeworms in dogs and puppies :

Ascarids : Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina (adult and late immature forms)
Hookworms : Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum (adults)
Whipworms : Trichuris vulpis (adults)
Tapeworms : Echinococcus spp. Taenia spp. and Dipylidium caninum (adult and immature forms)

In this fixed combination product pyrantel and febantel act synergistically against all relevant nematodes (ascarids, hookworms and whipworms) in dogs. In particular, the activity spectrum covers Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum and Trichuris vulpis. Pyrantel acts as a cholinergic agonist. Its mode of action is to induce spastic paralysis and thereby allow removal from the gastro-intestinal (GI) system by peristalsis. The parasite dies upon exhaustion of its energy reserves, which occurs 2-3 days later.

Warnings:

  • Do not use simultaneously with piperazine compounds. Consult a veterinary surgeon before treating pregnant animals for roundworms (see also Section 4.3 above). The tablets may be used during lactation (see Section 4.8 below). Do not exceed the stated dosage when treating pregnant bitches. Not for use in dogs weighing less than 3 kg.
  • Fleas serve as intermediate hosts for one common type of tapeworm - Dipylidium caninum.  Tapeworm infestation is certain to re-occur unless control of intermediate hosts such as fleas, mice etc. is undertaken.
  • In the interests of good hygiene, persons administering the tablets directly to a cat, or by adding them to the cat’s food, should wash their hands afterwards.
Dosage:

The recommended dose rates are:15 mg/kg bodyweight febantel,
14.4 mg/kg pyrantel and 5 mg/kg praziquantel. This is equivalent to 1 tablet per 10 kg bodyweight

Puppies and Small Dogs:
3-5 kg bodyweight = ½ tablet
6-10 kg bodyweight 1 tablet

Medium Dogs:
11-15 kg bodyweight = 1 ½ tablets
16-20 kg bodyweight = 2 tablets
21-25 kg bodyweight = 2 ½ tablets
26-30 kg bodyweight = 3 tablets

Large Dogs:
31-35 kg bodyweight = 3 ½ tablets
36-40 kg bodyweight = 4 tablets

Oral administration, the tablet(s) can be given directly to the dog or disguised in food. No need for starvation before or after treatment.

Puppies should be treated at 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks until 12 weeks of age. Thereafter they should be treated at 3 month intervals. It is advisable to treat the bitch at the same time as the puppies. Not for use in dogs weighing less than 3 kg.

For the control of Toxocara, nursing bitches should be dosed 2 weeks after giving birth and every 2 weeks until weaning.

For routine control adult dogs should be treated every 3 months. In the event of a heavy roundworm infestation, a repeat dose should be given after 14 days.

An Elven name for Orcs, this 'tasty' tablets is so bad that we can hardly get our bitch to swallow it even wrapped in cheese. Defo a point lost on delivery, then, but as I assume it does the job (once in) at a reasonable price, I'm inclined to go for 4 stars. Through great tribulation we inherit the kingdom:)

Good value worming tablets. Will be ordering again. Thank you.

Great product, great price

by -

This worming tablet is very easy to administer as it breaks in half. One of my dogs will just eat the tablet, the other I have to pop it down his throat as he will not be fooled with hiding it in a tasty treat. As the tablet has a scored breaking point, it is easier for me to give to my dog in two halves.
